Board of Management:
The Board of Management is responsible for balancing the books, for keeping the school in good physical order and repair, for ensuring that bills are paid and that the school is equipped is such a manner that the teachers can teach and the pupils learn.
Any major incidents in which there is injury or damage to the fabric will be referred to the Board, which has the responsibility for Health and Safety and Welfare at Work legislation. A continually disruptive pupil may be referred to the Board in circumstances where the staff believe that it may be necessary to invoke the Department of Education and Science's regulations on suspension and expulsion. However, such matters remain the responsibility of the teaching staff and the Board's advice and decisions are exorcised through them.
The Board is, therefore, primarily a spending body. It is concerned with practical matters and with the creation and implementation of general policies which are included in the school plan. It ensures that the school is clean and warm, that there are tables and chairs and equipment.
The members of the Board meet at least five times per year or more if required. The meetings of the Board are conducted with the utmost regard for confidentiality and no details of any individual and their problem, is allowed to be divulged, nor any items of discussion beyond those agreed to be made public by the Board itself. In doing so, the members of the Board are simply acting under the regulations laid down by the Department of Education and Science.
The parents' representatives may bring concerns expressed by parents to the Board in matters within the Board's responsibilities only, as outlined above. When the Board discusses the matter, the parents' representatives are not advocates but members.
Parents' concerns in relation to educational matters and the daily running of the school in relation to their child should discuss the matter firstly with the class teacher and then the school principal if necessary, as per our complaints procedure.
