When do I need to Send a Note to my child's teacher?

A note from parents must be presented when;

  • a child has been absent
  • a child has to go home early
  • a child is late arriving
  • a child has to be taken out of school for an appointment
  • homework has not been done

Are Mobile phones allowed in school?

Mobile phones may not be switched on from 8.20am to 2.00pm except in the case of an emergency.

What books will I need to buy?

School books are ordered and sold at the end of June by the school.

Books given on loan to pupils should be returned when pupils are finished using them/at the end of the school year.

An additional charge per pupil is requested by the Board of Management to cover the following: Assessment Tests / Art and Craft / Photocopying and Supplementary Teaching Resources.

Please ensure that your child has, clearly labelled:

  • at least 2 pencils
  • a sharpener to suit the pencils
  • a set of colours are an advantage. We recommend coloured pencils as they last longer
  • a sturdy rubber
  • a big old t-shirt/apron, for use during art is needed for Junior Infants to 2nd  Class

Attendance Policy

Each child is obliged by law to attend school every day, on which the school is in operation unless there is a reasonable explanation for not attending. The school authorities are obliged to notify the National Educational Welfare Board when a child is absent or late regularly or if a reasonable explanation has not been provided for an absence/ lateness by the child's parent. Any child who is absent twenty or more days cumulatively must be reported to the N.E.W.B.

Standardised Assessment Tests

All children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class will be tested during term one and term three. This is an essential part of the teaching and learning process and is invaluable in the learning support context. It has a formative role to play in that it can help to identify pupils who are having problems. These results will be discussed at parent/teacher meetings.

Special Needs Children

Children with special needs will be resourced in accordance with the level of resources provided by the Department of Education and Science to the Board of Management.

Any child needing Special Resources must access these prior to the start of the new school year. A case conference between all bodies concerned, (Parents/Guardians /Principal/Special Education Needs Officer) should be held at least three months beforehand.

Notwithstanding the availability of such resources, parents of children who are unsatisfied with the level of educational provision in our school, are advised to consider a special school which is designed and resourced to specifically cater for the needs of children with special educational needs.

Toys

Personal toys are not permitted in school. In addition to this on the basis of Health and Safety heelies, rollerblades or rollerskates may not be worn. The board will not take responsibility for any toys, electronic games or collectible cards on school property.

Party Invitations

Party invitations may not be distributed in school. In the past this practice has led to exclusion and anxiety.

If I need to Talk to a Teacher what do I do?

Frequent communication is of vital importance in developing and nurturing co operation between home and school.

In our school, communication between parents and teachers may take one of the following forms:

  • Individual Consultation:

This occurs where a parent has asked to meet a teacher or has been invited to visit the school to exchange information or to discuss matters of concern. (A note to the class teacher via the school secretary, or phone call, requesting such an appointment is always necessary).

  • Case Conference (Special Needs Children)
  • If a parent has a concern they may put this in writing to the teacher. Often, problems in school are caused by misunderstandings and teachers lack of awareness of certain relevant facts
  • Parent/Teacher meetings for pupils will be held annually in term one.
  • All meetings except the annual Parent/Teacher meetings will take place during class hours.
